Questions answered

Clear answers to common questions.

Integrating technology into a home or venue often raises practical questions. Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common things clients ask about how Drift works, what to expect during a project, and how systems are designed to integrate seamlessly with the space.

What does working with Drift actually look like?

We start with a conversation about how you want the space to feel and function - how you live or operate, how many people use it, where sound matters, what needs to stay online, and what hasn’t worked in the past.

From there, we assess the property, design the system in detail, and present a clear proposal.
Once approved, we coordinate installation and commissioning, so everything works as intended from day one. The process is structured, considered and tailored to the space.

When should we involve Drift?

As early as possible.

Bringing us in during design or planning means technology is considered alongside architecture and layout, not added as an afterthought. This reduces compromise, avoids unnecessary rework, and leads to a better overall outcome.

If you’re already mid-build or renovating, we can still step in and design a solution that works within the project as it stands.

Do you work with architects, builders and designers?

Yes. Collaboration is a core part of how we work.

We coordinate closely with architects, builders and interior designers to ensure technology integrates cleanly into the space and aligns with the broader design intent. This includes documentation, layout planning and timing coordination during the build.

Do we need to understand the technical side?

Not at all.

You don’t need to know the jargon or product names. Our role is to translate your needs into a system that works simply and reliably. We explain what matters in clear language, without overcomplicating it.

What happens after installation?

We remain available for ongoing support.

This can include remote monitoring, updates, troubleshooting and future planning, so the system stays stable, secure and easy to use over time.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi and the internet?

The internet is the service coming into your property, such as NBN or Starlink.

Wi-Fi is how that connection is distributed throughout the space.

You can have a fast internet service and still experience poor coverage or dropouts if the internal network isn’t designed properly. We make sure both the incoming service and the internal Wi-Fi network are set up to perform properly together.

Why does my Wi-Fi feel slow or patchy?

In most cases, it is not the internet speed - it is the network design.

Common causes include equipment placement, building materials, interference, or too many devices competing for bandwidth.

Most providers supply a single standard router, which is rarely designed to cover an entire home or larger venue properly. We design structured Wi-Fi systems using professional-grade hardware and considered placement to deliver consistent coverage throughout the property, including outdoor areas where needed.

What do FTTP, FTTN and Fixed Wireless mean?

These terms describe how the NBN reaches your property.

- FTTP means fibre runs all the way to the building and is generally the most reliable.
- FTTN means fibre runs to a street cabinet, with older copper cabling covering the final distance.
- Fixed Wireless means the service is delivered via an antenna that connects to a nearby tower.

If that sounds confusing, that is completely normal. We can check your address, confirm what is available, and explain the best options clearly.

What internet options are best in Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers?

It depends on the property and its location.

Some sites have excellent fibre connections, while others perform better on Starlink, particularly in rural or hinterland areas.

For businesses that rely on connectivity for bookings, payments or operations, we often recommend a primary connection with an automatic backup so the service remains available if one link fails.

Can you set up secure guest Wi-Fi?

Yes.

We design networks so guest Wi-Fi is separated from core systems such as payments, cameras and staff devices. This helps keep the network secure, stable and reliable, even during busy periods.

Do you design audio systems?

Yes.

From dedicated listening rooms and main stereo systems to discreet in-ceiling speakers and multi-zone hospitality setups, we design audio systems that suit the space both architecturally and acoustically.

The focus is always on sound quality, balance and ease of use, so the system feels simple day to day while performing as it should.

Can you design for outdoor and coastal environments?

Yes.

Coastal environments require the right equipment, materials and installation methods. We use weather-rated components and appropriate protection to ensure systems remain reliable in Byron’s coastal conditions over time.

What if my property has multiple buildings?

That is common in the region.

Whether it is a main house and studio, a retreat and cabins, or a hospitality site with multiple connected spaces, we design networks that link buildings securely and reliably while keeping everything centrally managed and easy to support over time.

Will the system be difficult to use day to day?

No.

A well-designed system should feel intuitive to use. The complexity sits behind the scenes, not in the day-to-day experience. Our role is to make sure the system feels consistent, reliable and easy to live or work with.

How much does a typical system cost?

It depends on the size of the property, the level of performance required, and how many systems are being integrated.

We do not use one-size-fits-all packages. Each system is designed specifically for the space, so pricing is tailored accordingly.

We provide clear proposals so you can understand what is included and where the investment is going. Please contact us to discuss your projects and costings.
